| IAD BOARD/OFFICERS WISH YOU ALL HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING WITH YOUR FAMILY |

| Washington Adventist Hospital after being in a coma since early Saturday morning. Sandy was born on 29 May 1940 in Washington, DC. He joined the International Typographers Union (ITU) where he worked at the Washington Post, New York Times, and finally at the Government Printing Office (GPO) where he retired in 1996. While at GPO, he established the Gallaudet University Bison Booster Club. Upon his retirement, he “un-retired” and worked full-time as the Executive Director for the Booster Club. He “re-retired” in 2002. While at Gallaudet, he was loved and respected by the student body and the community. His work with the Bison Booster Club resulted in the bleachers at the Hotchkiss Football Field, the running track, the prestigious Hall of Fame room at the Gallaudet Field House, as well with numerous contributions to the Gallaudet Athletic Department including the growing membership of the Bison Booster Club. His proudest achievement was the installation of the hardwood floor in the Field House. Sandy was a member of the National Association of the Deaf, the Maryland Association of the Deaf, the University of Maryland’s Terrapin Club as well as being involved with numerous activities and organizations for the deaf. In particular, he was very involved with the National Captioning Institute in the early 1980s where he was part of the group that broke through the barrier to begin closed-captioning on television including a massive protest against Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). He also was a past-President of the Metropolitan Washington Association for the Deaf (MWAD). He was one of the few individuals within the deaf community to be conferred with honorary memberships in the Kappa Gamma and the Alpha Sigma Pi Fraternities at Gallaudet. This prestigious privilege is usually reserved for any male president of Gallaudet or the spouse of a female president. Sandy loved sports, whether it was televised or being at a sporting event, his heart and blood was always excited when there was one in progress. In addition to being a fan of sports, he was the head coach for the MWAD basketball team, a basketball assistant coach, and a baseball head coach at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD). He was also the team manager for the District of Columbia Club for the Deaf (DCCD) men’s basketball team when they won their first and only American Athletic Association for the Deaf (AAAD) championship in 1965. He was an extremely loyal season ticket holder with the Washington Redskins along with the University of Maryland’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs. He was able to attend the NCAA Final Four games where the University of Maryland’s Men’s Basketball team won their first-ever national championship in 2001 at Atlanta, Georgia. He was very happy to have watched the women’s team win their first-ever national championship in 2006 at Boston, Massachusetts on television. Another love of his was baseball. He was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. After years of frustration in seeing the Curse of the Bambino plague the Red Sox, he was full of joy when the team won its first World Series after 84 years. He was a die-hard Washington Senators fan until they moved to Texas. He was very thrilled with baseball’s return to Washington with the Washington Nationals. In August 2006, Sandy traveled for the first time outside of the 48 states of the United States for a much-deserved vacation in Hawai’i and experiencing paradise. This trip was a very wonderful one for him and Teddy. He could not stop talking about his trip after his return. The family wants to thank everyone who has shown their support to them in their time of sadness but they know that Sandy will love it if his passing was seen as a celebration of his life as he lived it to the fullest possible. Sandy is survived by his wife, Teddy and his two children, Karl and Darlene. Further information on a memorial service will be announced soon.
